Play with me - special edition of 30 fine Art prints.
As much as I like to imagine this Arctic Wolf wanted to play with me, he was most likely scent rolling, a complex behavior where wolves rub their bodies and heads against objects bearing strong odors, serving likely purposes of communication, camouflage, or sensory exploration. A primary theory suggests wolves bring a scent back to the pack to share information about a significant discovery, such as a large carcass location. Another function may be to mask their own scent for better hunting stealth. It also acts as a method to deposit their personal scent onto the object, effectively marking it as their own territory or discovery.
Watching and photographing the Arctic wolves on Ellesmere Island was a profound and emotional experience. The landscape itself felt otherworldly—vast stretches of snow, ice and rock, endless silence, and a sense of isolation unlike anywhere else I had been. In that emptiness, the presence of the wolves felt especially powerful, as if they belonged to the land in a way nothing else could.
What struck me most was their calmness. They moved without fear or urgency, aware of me but not alarmed. As I photographed them, I felt a deep sense of trust had been granted, something rare and fragile. Their pale coats blended almost seamlessly into the Arctic surroundings, and their steady eyes reflected curiosity rather than aggression. Being so close, yet completely respectful of their space, made the moment feel incredibly intimate.
Photographing the Arctic wolves on Ellesmere Island wasn’t just about capturing images; it was about feeling connected to wilderness in its purest form, where gentleness survives even in the most extreme conditions.
