Arctic Wolves, Ellesmere Island. April, 2024

Arctic Wolves constantly roam in search of food, during winter they maintain vast territories that can stretch well over 2,000 square kilometers, one of the largest territories for any land mammal.
It’s not unusual for a Arctic Wolf to travel 50 km or more in a day on Ellesmere Island, and one wolf was recorded traveling almost 6,000 kilometers in an nearly nine month period!

After many days of searching for Arctic Wolves in the vast remote north of Ellesmere island we finally found them when they were on the move, they were curious and approached us to take a closer look before continuing on their way west.
We followed them for hours as they were moving with ease on the barren frozen landscape, at times it wasn’t so clear who is following who as they kept coming closer and sometimes running just a few meters behind or beside the snowmobile.At some point it become clear that they are on a mission, they suddenly switched to a hunting mood, the pack increased the pace and unfolded in a movement structure that spread across the frozen tundra and led by the alpha pair. I rode alongside them on the back seat of a snowmobile and captured this image using a wide-angle lens while on the move, it was amazing to see them so focused on the mission and completely oblivious to my presence. A couple of minutes later they found what they were looking for - a Musk Ox herd.
